Van Diemans Road, Chelmsford, Essex | Traffic-Signals

Overview

This signal-controlled pedestrian crossing is sited on a multi-lane approach, without a splitter-island, and was protected by only two pavement-sited traffic lights. For drivers leaving the roundabout, heading southbound on Van Diemans Road, the offside signal was repeatedly obscured by high-sided vehicles and this was for extended periods due to queuing traffic for the Army & Navy roundabout. With the nearside signal only seen belatedly and also that the bulb could fail at any time, these conditions seriously compromised the safety of crossing pedestrians. Additional signal-heads on tall poles were installed and have dramatically improved safety at this busy location.
