ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) FOR MOTORCYCLES, A SIMPLE WAY TO SAVE THOUSANDS OF LIVES EVERY YEAR ACROSS SOUTH EAST ASIA

The Safer Roads Foundation, Towards Zero Foundation, Global NCAP, ASEAN NCAP, MIROS, Stop the Crash Partnership and the European Transport Safety Council have collaborated to ensure decision makers understand the reality that the standard fitment of ABS on all motorcycles and scooters with a design speed of 50kph or more would make a dramatic difference in reducing casualties.

Together with encouraging the routine wearing of helmets, there's a simple and effective way to save thousands of lives every year and that is to introduce ABS, at least on the front wheel for all motorcycles. What many fail to realise is that the cost of a unit is now extremely modest and it's tragic that so many lives continue to be lost each day in accidents which never need to happen.

Policymakers are urged to seize without delay the opportunity to mandate ABS which would save a staggering 40,000 lives in South East Asia alone in the first five years.
