Creation of the first ‘Speed Enforcement Corridor’ for 4km on the N77 and Old National Road, Chalkis-Psachna, to address accident black spot

The Road Safety Institute ‘Panos Mylonas’ (RSI Panos Mylonas) was established following the tragic loss of Panos Mylonas, who died at the age of 22 in a car accident on March 22, 2004 on his way to class at the University of Patras (Greece). He was killed by a motorcyclist travelling at 170km/h on the wrong side of the road. Since its foundation, RSI has worked relentlessly to reduce the number of casualties on the roads in Greece which has one of the highest rates of traffic-related deaths, proportionate to its population, in the European Union.

The Safer Roads Foundation and RSI have collaborated over many years on numerous road safety accident remedial projects and introduced the first ‘Speed Enforcement Corridor’ on the N77 consisting of large high-profile gateway plaques, repeater signs (50kp/h and camera icon), together with four mains-powered radar-activated VMS’ to highlight vehicle speeds in red or green on the display (two in each direction at KM1 and KM3). This is complemented by active enforcement by the police using speed guns donated by SRF.

Since the scheme’s introduction, there have been no fatalities or serious injuries.
