Overview

Due to excessive vehicle speeds on National Road 77/Old National Road resulting in numerous fatalities, in collaboration with its partner in Greece, Road Safety Panos-Mylonas, SRF supported the introduction of a 4km speed enforcement zone. The relatively simple and low-cost remedial measures consisted of introducing high-profile accident black spot signage at the commencement of the southbound and northbound sections emphasising the 50 km/hr limit, with ‘repeater’ signs at approximately every 330 metres, and the installation of Radar Vehicle Active Signs (VAS) showing vehicle speeds in red/green.

SRF also provided funding for the purchase of a mobile radar gun for the Hellenic traffic police to use at this location.
